As the population ages and life expectancy increases, legal issues arising from the care of vulnerable individuals are becoming ever more prevalent and complex. Practitioners are increasingly confronted with disputes involving capacity, financial control, and the protection of assets – both during lifetime and after death.

This half-day conference from the Private Client Team at Gatehouse Chambers will examine the legal and practical challenges arising in the care of vulnerable individuals, both during lifetime and after death.

The programme will explore key risk areas including the misuse and abuse of Lasting Powers of Attorney, disputes concerning care home fees and attempts to shield assets from recovery, and the growing prevalence of undue influence in later-life decision making. Speakers will consider how these issues arise in practice, how they are identified, and the remedies available to practitioners seeking to protect clients and their estates.

The conference will also address post-death disputes, with a focus on asset recovery, tracing, and claims arising from financial abuse or questionable transactions during lifetime.
