Costs Brew | Solicitors’ Estimates: Where are we now?

In this Brew, Martyn Griffiths and Priya Gopal discuss the circumstances in which solicitors’ reasonable costs will be restricted by reference to an estimate given to their client. This is a commonly raised point in Solicitors Act assessments and can be a trap for the unwary.

Martyn and Priya discuss what solicitors need to do to avoid an estimates point being raised and strategic tips for advancing or defending estimates points when they do arise. They will analyse the developments in the law in this field, following Martyn’s successful appearance in Spanakis v Schillings where the High Court dismissed the client’s appeal that the solicitors’ costs ought to have been reduced on assessment.
